MS Square & Rectangular Pipe Weight Chart (SHS / RHS)

Size, thickness and weight per metre for mild steel square and rectangular hollow sections.

Use this chart to estimate MS square and rectangular hollow section weight per metre before you request a quote. For other sizes, use the pipe weight calculator.

Weight formula

kg/m = 0.00785 × t × (2 × (A + B) − 4 × t)
A, B = outside sides in mm  |  t = wall thickness in mm

Buying tips

  • Specify outside size × thickness × length, for example 50 × 50 × 3 × 6000 mm.
  • For painted work, ask for clean, oil-free tubes. For outdoor use consider galvanized sections.
  • Bulk buyers can save on wastage by ordering cut-to-length.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Weight in kg per metre = 0.00785 × t × (2 × (A + B) − 4 × t), where A and B are the outside side lengths and t is the wall thickness, all in mm. For a square pipe A and B are equal. This gives the theoretical weight for steel of density 7.85 g/cm³.

SHS is a hollow steel tube with a square cross-section, used in structures, frames, gates, trusses, racks and machinery. Rectangular tubes are called RHS. Indian standards for hollow sections include IS 4923 and IS 1161; confirm which applies to your project.

Real tubes have rounded corners, and thickness and length have manufacturing tolerances, so billing weight can differ slightly from the theoretical figure. Quoted prices are per kg or per piece based on actual weighment.

Most MS square and rectangular tubes are supplied in 6 metre lengths. Cut-to-size lengths can be arranged on request.
