CR Pipe Full Form: What Is a CR Pipe? (CR vs HR Pipe)

Cold rolled pipe explained: full form, differences from HR pipe, uses in furniture and appliances, and how to choose.

What is a CR pipe?

A CR pipe is a welded steel pipe or tube made from cold rolled steel strip. The strip is rolled at or near room temperature, then formed and welded (ERW) into a round, square or rectangular section. The result is a clean, bright surface, uniform wall thickness and close dimensional control.

CR = Cold Rolled. You will also see the same product called cold rolled pipe, CR tube, C R pipe or, loosely, CRCA pipe (after the cold rolled close annealed strip it is made from).

CR pipe vs HR pipe

Raw materialCold rolled stripHot rolled strip
Surface finishSmooth, bright, paint-readyRougher, mill scale present
Dimensional toleranceTighterWider
Wall thicknessThin to medium gaugesMedium to heavy gauges

Note: Surface and tolerance are the main reasons to pay more for CR. If the pipe will be hidden or heavily welded, HR/MS pipe is usually the economical choice.

Where CR pipes are used

  • Furniture: office chairs, tables, cots, school furniture, racks
  • Home appliances: frames and stands, fans, coolers
  • Automobile and two-wheeler parts: light tubular components
  • Fitness equipment: gym frames and handles
  • Electrical enclosures and display units that need a smooth finish

How to choose a CR pipe

  1. Shape and size: outside diameter (or side lengths) in mm
  2. Wall thickness: thinner saves weight, thicker adds stiffness
  3. Length: standard 6 m or cut-to-length for less wastage
  4. Finish: plain, oiled or ready for plating and powder coating
  5. Quantity and delivery city so freight can be quoted correctly

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

CR pipe stands for Cold Rolled pipe. It is a welded steel tube made from cold rolled steel strip, which gives a smoother surface and tighter dimensional tolerance than a hot rolled (HR) pipe.

CR pipes are made from cold rolled strip and have a bright, smooth finish, tighter tolerances and thinner wall options. HR pipes are made from hot rolled strip, cost less, and suit structural and general fabrication where cosmetic finish matters less.

Not exactly. CRCA (cold rolled close annealed) describes the strip or coil that is used as raw material. A CR pipe is the finished tube made from that cold rolled strip. In day-to-day trade the terms CR pipe, CRCA pipe and CRC pipe are often used for the same product, so always confirm size, thickness and grade in writing.

Round CR pipes from about 19 mm to 38 mm outside diameter in thin wall gauges are common for chair, table and rack frames. Share your drawing or load requirement and we will suggest a size and thickness.

Yes. The smooth surface of a CR pipe takes paint, powder coating and electroplating well, which is why furniture and appliance makers prefer it.
