What is an MS pipe?
An MS pipe is a pipe made of mild steel (low-carbon steel). It is made by ERW welding of steel strip or as a seamless pipe, and is used for water supply, fire-fighting lines, structural frames, fabrication and general engineering. In India, MS pipes are also called MS tubes, black pipes or mild steel pipes.

How to choose the right MS pipe
- Water, air, fire-fighting lines: MS round pipe (ERW) to IS 1239, medium or heavy class.
- Structures, sheds, frames, gates: MS square or rectangular hollow section, or round pipe to IS 1161.
- High pressure or high temperature: MS seamless pipe to ASTM A106 Gr B, Sch 40 or Sch 80.
- Outdoor water lines: consider a galvanized (GI) pipe for corrosion resistance.
- Jointing: match the pipe with MS flanges, weld neck, slip-on or blind flanges.

An MS pipe is plain mild steel, supplied black or primed. A GI pipe is a mild steel pipe with a zinc coating for corrosion resistance. MS is preferred for structures and fabrication that will be painted or welded; GI is preferred for water supply and outdoor lines.
